Canada Post has announced that the Chinatown Post Office (418 Main Street) will be closing on November 12, 2025. The abrupt closure of the branch has caught the community by surprise. SaveChinatownYVR has launched a campaign to keep the post office in Chinatown, as many residents of the Downtown Eastside and Chinatown depend on the branch for the delivery of government documents, income assistance, healthcare information, and other general mail services.
Many post offices across the country, including the Chinatown Post Office, are run under a franchise agreement. The decision to close the branch therefore falls between the franchisee and Canada Post, although Canada Post could theoretically take over the lease and continue postal services, or seek/accept a new franchisee to operate a post office in the neighbourhood.
