Ming Pao Ceases Publication

Canada’s last remaining daily Chinese language newspaper, Ming Pao Daily News, is ceasing publication this month. The print newspaper, which was first launched in 1993, used to have an office in Chinatown at 135-139 Keefer Street, just steps away from Goldstone and the Chinatown Memorial Square. Since then, the newspaper has been a Chinatown fixture, reliably found in clan associations, supermarket check-out aisles, corner stores, and hair salons. The newspaper will cease printing after Friday, January 16, 2026, while the remainder of the newsroom will close at the end of this month.

The departure of this last regular print news source raises questions around the availability of news and information more broadly across the Chinatown and wider Chinese community, as well as new challenges for clan and hometown associations where the newspaper has been an important draw for members to spend time in their historic buildings and socialize.
