Our neighbours at the Powell Street Festival Society are hosting a free event this weekend at the Vancouver Buddhist Temple (220 Jackson Avenue)! This community dialogue hopes to bring together folks from across communities for conversations on the conceptions of memorialization, monuments, and public spaces in the DTES.
From the Powell Street Festival Society website:
Bringing together artists, urban planners, community organizers, architects, landscape architects, and members of the Japanese Canadian (JC), Indigenous, and Downtown Eastside communities, this event seeks to catalyze important conversations about memorialization in the historic JC neighbourhood of Paueru Gai (Powell Street area) – today known as the Downtown Eastside (DTES) on the unceded and occupied traditional territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples.
