Role Descriptions
As members of a working board, new Directors are expected to commit 5-10 hours a month to Chinatown Today and attend biweekly board meetings. Directors are responsible for guiding the strategic and operational decision-making of Chinatown Today, overseeing the organisation’s work in sharing Chinatown’s stories through publications and free community events.
Specific core responsibilities vary by position on the Board, while additional responsibilities and projects can be tailored to the skills and interests of successful applicants. Both continuing and departing Directors will provide guidance and help transition new Directors into their roles with Chinatown Today.
Secretary:
The Secretary helps ensure that Chinatown Today runs smoothly and is in charge of scheduling, minutes, and email communications for the organisation. The Secretary is also the point person for important tasks such as filing annual reports and renewing our business licence. Outside of these core duties, past Secretaries have assisted with website translation, supported at events, or written articles for publication.
Vice President:
The Vice President helps chair meetings and is in charge of volunteer and stakeholder engagement. This role has been particularly flexible in the past, with past Vice Presidents having planned events with and provided guidance to the Project Leads, led projects like the “Let’s Walk Chinatown!” card deck or the “Across Cultures and Generations” panel series, written articles for publication, audited our website, or helped develop policies and best practices for Chinatown Today.
Social Media Lead
The Social Media Lead is in charge of Chinatown Today’s presence on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, including posting, monitoring inboxes, designing graphics, and creating short-form videos. The Social Media Lead plays an important role in documenting Chinatown Today’s work and ensuring that Chinatown stories can be shared with a wide audience. Past Social Media Leads have assisted with filming Instagram Reels and TikToks, coming up with posts or series of posts to promote projects like the “Let’s Walk Chinatown!” card deck or Chinatown Stories, and designing graphics to share community information like resistance to 105 Keefer, holiday traditions, and free/low-cost Chinatown events.
Project Lead(s):
The Project Lead(s) will join current Project Lead Cathy Xu in spearheading Chinatown Today’s free public events like our Chinatown Stories launch events and Spirit of the Square (our summer celebration of the Hungry Ghost Festival), or other projects like the “Let’s Walk Chinatown!” card deck, the Chinatown Story Map, and the Chinatown Egg Tart Crawl. Past Project Leads have led these events and projects as well as others, including our Chinatown Fall Movie Nights, the “Across Cultures and Generations” panel series, and Lunar New Year “Hot & Noisy” Mahjong Socials. Other projects have included writing stories or planning stories series for publication, and creating content that help our community engage with Chinatown.
About Chinatown Today
Chinatown Today is a youth-led non-profit based in Vancouver’s Chinatown, on the unceded territories of the xwməθkwəyəm, Skxwú7mesh, and səlilwətaʔɬ nations. Through our signature publication, Chinatown Stories, as well as our website and events, Chinatown Today highlights community needs, educates the public, and shares Chinatown’s stories – past, present, and future.
Over the past couple of years, we have sought to balance our physical and digital presence in the community by providing a platform for community voices against gentrification (including 105 Keefer), hosting free public events like our annual Spirit of the Square and Lunar New Year “Hot & Noisy” Mahjong Socials (in collaboration with Chinatown Generations Society & Bagua Artist Association) and local filmmaker screenings, publishing Chinatown Stories Volume 5: The Bridges Between Us, and sharing new and old ways to appreciate Chinatown through the Chinatown Egg Tart Crawl & the “Let’s Walk Chinatown!” Card Deck.
As we move into our next chapter as an organisation, we hope to continue publishing community news and Chinatown Stories while holding more regular events and further place-making in the physical spaces that make up our Chinatown. For more about Chinatown Today, visit our About page here.
