Upcoming Event: Chinese New Year Parade – 11am February 11

Vancouver’s Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) Parade returns on Sunday, February 11, 2024, starting at 11:00 am at the Millenium Gate (000 Block W Pender). The parade will head east on Pender until Gore, then take a right and proceed on Gore until Keefer, then take another right and proceed west on Keefer until the end point at Carrall.

First organized in 1973, the parade heralds the start of each new year in the chinese calendar, with this year (2024) being the year of the dragon. Lion dancing, firecrackers, and the abundance of the colour red symbolize the warding off of Nian, a monster that, according to legend, would terrorize the people around the time of the new year. Last year’s parade, marking the year of the rabbit, drew crowds of over 150,000, and hosted dozens of community groups including lion dance, dragon dance, traditional dancing, and more.

When: Sunday, February 11 at 11am
Where: East Pender Street, Gore Avenue & Keefer Street
Cost:
 Free!

In addition to the Spring Festival Parade, the courtyard in front of the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Park will host a Spring Festival Cultural Fair from 2-4pm.
